Mudlarks Community Garden Hertford

Mudlarks provides training in horticulture and conservation based skills that caters for the needs of people with learning difficulties in the Hertford area on an allotment site leased from Hertford Town Council.

The building project comprises a workshop/ welfare building, tool shed and composting toilet. We obtained planning permission for these buildings as the allotments are in the Green Belt, and provided technical assistance so that they could be constructed by volunteers and trainees.

The buildings sit lightly on the ground on ‘reversible’ foundations. The workshop is largely constructed from timber-based components and materials reclaimed from a redundant Garden Centre building. It is insulated using non-itch fibre insulation manufactured from 85% recycled plastic bottles, and has a sedum roof.

Mudlarks is a community where plants and people grow. The buildings contribute to:

  • Enabling people of all ages and abilities to work together.
  • Raising awareness of the needs to protect and conserve our environment.
  • Offering training, education, recreation and personal development.
